Although she had no funds, she started an open-air school for slum children in Motijhil and even the prime minister expressed his appreciation for her work. She founded a religious order in Calcutta called the Missionaries of Charity, on 7th October 1950.
The order provided food for the needy and operated hospitals, schools, orphanages, youth centres and shelters for lepers and dying, poor people, and people affected with HIV/AIDS. In 1956, the society became an International Religious Family by a decree of Pope Paul VI. Mother Teresa also founded the Missionaries of Charity Brothers in 1963, a reflective branch of the Sisters in 1976, the Missionaries of Charity Fathers in 1984.
